CO2e
THE CO2e LABEL INDICATES THE CLIMATE IMPACT
Equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) is used to describe the total global-warming effect of greenhouse gases. The CO2e-label indicates the total amount of the produced carbon dioxide that is emitted into the atmosphere by the product during its production chain from the field to shop storage.
The Journey of Food from Primary Production to Shop Storage:
Primary Production
The production of raw materials, for instance, the cultivation of oat, wheat, sugar beet and canola or the production of milk, meat and honey, forms the major part of foodstuff carbon dioxide emissions. Primary-production emissions are generated from, for example, sowing, fertilization, drying, animal feeding and the use of machinery on farms.
Processing
During the processing stage, emissions are generated when the foodstuff is processed from raw-material to end product.
Packaging
The packaging-stage emissions are generated from packing materials, the production of the packaging and the deliveries to the factory.
Distribution
The distribution emissions are generated from the raw-material deliveries to the factory and the end-product deliveries to shop storage.
